Summer in Huizhou 2026: Island Water Sports, Litchi Harvest & Bioluminescent Night Swims

Summer is the loudest season in Huizhou. The coast is a 90-minute escape from Shenzhen, the lychee trees drop fruit thick enough to carpet the orchards, and on certain warm nights the sea around Yanzhou Island lights up blue where you kick. Below is the 2026 plan I give friends with kids, friends who travel solo, and friends who only have a weekend.

TL;DR — Summer Huizhou at a Glance

| Period | Weather & Sea | Best For | Crowds |
|—|—|—|—|
| Late May – mid-Jun | 28-32°C, sea 24-26°C, low rain | Water sports start, litchi early varieties ripen | Low-Medium |
| Mid-Jun – mid-Jul | 30-34°C, sea 26-28°C, frequent afternoon storms | Peak swimming, litchi main season | HIGH (school holidays + Dragon Boat) |
| Late Jul – Aug | 32-36°C, sea 28-30°C, typhoon risk 1-2/week | Best night-bioluminescence, indoor museums | Medium-High |
| Early Sep | 30-32°C, sea 28-29°C, less rain | Last swimming window, mid-autumn festival prep | Low |

Author’s Tip: The single best 10 days of summer in Huizhou are June 20-30: litchi is at peak, the sea is warm enough for comfortable all-day swimming, and the Dragon Boat Festival crowds have just left. Arrive any week of June 20-30 and you get the best balance of fruit, weather, and beach.

Author’s Warning: August is typhoon month. Every year 1-2 typhoons make landfall within 300 km of Huizhou. The coast is evacuated for 24-48 hours during a direct hit, ferries to Yanzhou Island stop, and Xunliao Bay’s beach patrol is suspended. Book refundable hotels only for August, and check the Hong Kong Observatory 5-day forecast 72 hours before any coastal booking.

1. Late May – June: The Litchi Harvest Begins

Huizhou is the litchi capital of Guangdong. The harvest window is short (mid-May to mid-July, by variety) and the best fruit disappears within 24 hours of picking. If you come in summer, you will eat litchi every day — and you’ll never go back to the canned supermarket version.

The varieties and timing (Boluo & Huidong):
Huaizhi (怀枝): mid-May to early June. Small, sweet-tart, the “classic” litchi. ¥15-20/kg at orchard.
Feizi (妃子笑): late May to mid-June. The famous “Concubine’s Laugh” variety — large, slightly tangy. ¥25-40/kg.
Nuomici (糯米糍): mid-June to early July. The premium variety — small, intensely sweet, low-acid. ¥40-80/kg. This is the one to try.
Guiwei (桂味): late June to mid-July. Fragrant, the latest variety. ¥35-60/kg.

Where to pick:
Huidong Pingtan orchards (惠东平潭果园): 30+ family orchards open for picking, ¥30-50/person entry + fruit. Search WeChat `pingtan_litchi` for the orchard list. Some offer English-speaking hosts.
Boluo Luoyang Village orchards (博罗罗阳村果园): smaller, less touristy, but closer to Luofu Mountain for a day-trip combo.
Note: Most orchards require a 3-day booking via WeChat. Weekend slots fill 1 week ahead.

Real Visitor Voice: “I went litchi-picking with my 5-year-old at a Pingtan orchard in late June. We ate maybe 3 kg of Nuomici right off the trees. My daughter cried when we had to leave. The orchard auntie packed us a 5kg box for the train back to Shenzhen — at ¥30/kg it was the cheapest, freshest fruit we’ve ever had in China.” — Sarah L., Singapore, visited June 2025

2. June – July: Xunliao Bay Water Sports

Xunliao Bay is the single best water-sports destination in the eastern GBA. The bay is sheltered, the water clarity averages 1.5-2 m in summer, and the operators are competitive enough that prices are 30-50% lower than Shenzhen’s Dameisha. See the full Xunliao Bay Complete Guide for transport; below is the water-sports card.

| Activity | Price (¥/person, 2026) | Best Age | Duration |
|—|—|—|—|
| Stand-up paddleboard (SUP) | 80-120 (rental 60 min) | 8+ | 1 hour |
| Kayak (single/double) | 60-100 | 6+ | 1 hour |
| Jet ski (2 people) | 280-380 / 30 min | 16+ (license required for solo) | 30 min |
| Banana boat (5 people) | 200-280 | All ages | 15 min |
| Parasailing | 280-380 | 12+ | 15 min flight |
| Sea scooter / underwater scooter | 180-250 | 8+ | 30 min |
| Diving (PADI discover scuba) | 480-680 | 10+ | 2 hours |
| Snorkeling tour to Yanzhou Island | 280-380 (with gear) | 8+ | 3-4 hours |

Author’s Tip: The single best deal at Xunliao in 2026 is the Xunliao Bay water-sports combo card (¥480) — it includes 2 SUPs + 1 jet ski 30 min + 1 banana boat + 1 sea scooter. Available at the Wangsha Beach (望沙滩) operator’s booth; ask for “套餐” (combo). This is a 35% saving vs booking individually.

Where to book:
– WeChat: `xunliao_watersports` (the official bay operator’s account) — 2 days advance for weekends
– Walk-up at the beach operator’s booth in Financial Street (金融街) — 9:00-17:00 daily

Author’s Warning: Two scams to avoid:

  • Drifting jet ski pricing — confirm the price per 30 min BEFORE you mount. Some operators quote “¥280/half hour” then add “fuel” and “guide” to bring it to ¥500+.
  • Underwater scooter photo package upsell — the base ¥180 should include a printed photo. Some operators charge ¥80 extra; refuse.
  • 3. Late July – August: Yanzhou Island Night Bioluminescence

This is the single most magical natural experience in Huizhou in summer. From late July to early September, on warm, calm nights (no wind, no moon, no rain in the past 24 hours), the plankton (Vibrio harveyi, a bioluminescent species) in the shallow mangrove channels around Yanzhou Island lights up electric blue when disturbed.

    When it works:
    – Calendar: July 20 – September 5
    – Conditions: no moon (new moon week is best), wind <15 km/h, no rain in the past 24 hours - Time: 21:00 – 02:00 (peak 22:00-24:00) Where to go:
Yanzhou Island Mangrove Channel (盐洲岛红树林): the southern side, near Banzhu Village (白珠村). Park at the village’s south pier (¥10 day parking).
Join a tour (¥180-280/person): Search WeChat `yanzhou_bioluminescence` for 2026 operator list. Tours include transport, guide, and life jackets. Self-navigation is possible but the channels are tidal and easy to get lost in.

What to expect: Knee-deep mud (the channels are mangrove mudflat at low tide), very small biting insects (DEET recommended), and an unforgettable blue glow. You’ll see it most clearly by walking/swimming slowly — every step sends a blue shockwave. The plankton is non-toxic; this is a different species from the toxic “red tide” blooms.

Real Visitor Voice: “I’d heard about bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico and seen YouTube videos, but the Huizhou version blew my mind. We were standing in knee-deep water at midnight and the entire bay was glowing blue. The local kids were laughing, splashing, glowing. I’ll never forget it.” — James W., USA, visited August 2025

    4. August: The Typhoon Reality

Tropical storm risk July-October, peak August. Historical landfall rate: 1 typhoon per 1.5 years within 200 km of Huizhou, 1 typhoon per 5 years direct hit. Most years: 2-3 named storms pass within 300 km.

    What a typhoon does:
    – 12-18 hours before: ferries cancelled, Xunliao beach patrol suspended
    – 0-12 hours before: highway closures, train services suspended, schools/offices closed
    – During: 80-130 km/h winds, 200-400 mm rain in 24 hours
    – After: clean-up takes 24-48 hours; some beaches closed for swimming 3-5 days after

    How to handle it:
    – Book refundable hotels only
    – Subscribe to Huizhou Meteorological Bureau WeChat `huizhou_qixiang` — they push 6-hourly updates
    – If a typhoon warning is issued, cancel coastal plans, switch to inland (Luofu Mountain, Boluo walled villages)
    – Re-book for the next available weekend

    5. What to Eat in Summer

    | Dish | Where to Try |
    |—|—|
    | Salt-baked chicken (盐焗鸡) | Boluo is the origin — try Boluo Yan Ji (博罗盐鸡街) restaurant cluster |
    | Sea urchin fried rice (海胆炒饭) | Xunliao fishing port — ¥60-80/portion |
    | Steamed clams with basil (金不换炒花蛤) | Any Huidong seafood restaurant, ¥40-60 |
    | Mango pomelo sago (杨枝甘露) | Huizhou chain dessert shops — Mango Cha (芒果茶) is a local favorite |
    | Coconut jelly (椰子冻) | Yanzhou Island fishing port, ¥15-25 |
    | Fresh litchi (荔枝) | Pick-your-own at orchards, see above |
    | Hakka stuffed tofu (酿豆腐) | Boluo walled village restaurants |

Author’s Tip: The single best seafood meal in Huizhou is at Xunliao’s old fishing port (巽寮老渔港), not the Financial Street tourist area. Look for the 5-6 family-run restaurants on the pier’s east side. Order whatever the owner recommends that day. Expect ¥120-180/person with rice, beer, and 4-5 dishes.

    6. 3-Day Weekend Itinerary (from Shenzhen or Guangzhou)

    | Day | Activities |
    |—|—|
    | Day 1 (Sat) | AM: high-speed rail to Huizhou South, DIDI to Xunliao Bay (90 min, ¥120). Check in. PM: SUP + banana boat. Evening: seafood at old fishing port. |
    | Day 2 (Sun) | AM: litchi-picking at Pingtan orchard (book 3 days ahead). PM: jet ski + sea scooter at Wangsha Beach. Evening: night bioluminescence tour to Yanzhou. |
    | Day 3 (Mon) | AM: beach walk + brunch. DIDI to Huizhou South, return. |

    FAQ

Is the coast safe for children?
Yes — Xunliao, Yanzhou, and Shili Yintan all have lifeguards May-October, 8:00-18:00. Swim within marked zones. Children under 12 should wear life jackets (rental ¥20/day at any operator).

Can I do a day trip from Shenzhen?
Xunliao Bay is 1.5 hours from Shenzhen. A 7 AM departure gets you to the beach by 9 AM. Worth it for 1-2 days; not for a single rushed day.

    What’s the budget per day?
    Mid-range: ¥400-600/person (hotel + food + 1-2 activities). Budget: ¥250-400. Luxury (5-star): ¥1,200-2,500.

    Are the bioluminescence tours reliable?
No — 30-50% of nights in July-August are too windy or too rainy. The tour operators will refund or reschedule. Don’t book the tour too early; book 1-2 days ahead when the forecast is clearer.

Is the litchi season the same every year?
No — it shifts ±10 days with the spring temperatures. In 2025 the Nuomici peak was June 18-28. In 2024 it was June 8-18. Check WeChat `huidong_litchi` 2 weeks before your trip.
